Smiles & Frowns
Smile (noun):
An expression on your face in which your mouth curves upwards to show that you are happy, amused, friendly, etc. Frown (verb): To make an angry, unhappy, or confused expression, moving your eyebrows together. [adapted from Longman dictionary] Smiles and frowns are probably the most-used expression of all time. When you see someone familiar, you'll smile. When you see someone familiar but can't quite remember who that person is, you'll frown. When you read a random SMS, you'll smile. When you don't agree with what someone has said, you'll frown. It's fascinating how even small changes can trigger different expression in a split second - be it smile or frown. Smiles make happy days while frowns make bad days. Do they, really? Again, it boils down to an individual's perception and choice. I think there is always a balance between these two. Surely frowns creep in into our faces at least once a day. But does that mean the day is doomed? Life is no fairytale. Wouldn't it be creepy to be smiling all the time? My point is, life's hiccups and challenges are unavoidable. There will be times when something or someone pisses you off, causing you to frown. But there are also times when something or someone does things that makes your mouth curve upwards, or make you laugh out loud, or make you grin like an idiot. We can't only expect good things to happen all the time. I personally think a balance of smiles and frowns, is healthy. It'll keep us content, more appreciative and less arrogant. It gives us perspectives and enable us to make choices. So the next time something or someone causes you to frown, don't fret. Just keep note that smiles are on its way. =) |
